Applying to SMEs and Start-Ups

There are various kinds of workplaces like MNCs, SMEs and Start-ups. The personality and culture of each workplace is quite different from each other, and the differences are unique.

While applying for a role at SMEs and Start-Ups, along technical/core competencies, other competencies most essential to become successful are: Competency 1 – Making your hands dirty – SMEs and start-ups work with really tight budgets and learn how to DIY. Hence flexibility is the key. The exposure to a candidate is manifold.

Competency 2 – Being strong team players – In an SME or Start-Up, you will drown if you don’t work well with others. It is common for everyone to ask each other for help and return the favor. It is more about Generalization with a focus on Specialization.

Competency 3 – Humility and learning agility – Nothing can be taken for granted. Without a silver spoon or safety net, those with SME/ start-up backgrounds are usually more sensitive to shifts that affect the company and are prepared to be on standby to respond, whenever needed.
